I have a place in my heart for all of these rockin’ doom-tinged songs. And now you don’t even need to buy the game to enjoy them 🎶.

Creating the sound of Cryohazard

Playing, writing, and enjoying music has been a massive part of my life for a long time now. Whenever I start a new project, I often times nail down sounds and musical ideas very early in the creative process. Because art isn’t my forte, knowing what the right sound is first and foremost can be so helpful in figuring out what the heck it is I’m making.

Cryohazard came in the wake of a previous failed project, on which I had dedicated an abundance of time trying to perfectly fine-tune dozens of complex tracks, leaving me with a mixing/mastering nightmare having to blend a lot of instruments and sounds together.

For Cryohazard, I wanted to leave that all behind, and focus on simpler, stronger, and more alien sounding songs. I was exploring using a new and free VST called the Surge Synthesizer, which is used on the majority of Cryohazard’s tracks. Another free VST I was able to use to great effect was the MT-PowerDrumKit, which features tight and snappy drum sounds without the need for a lot of tweaking.

Will my next game sound like Cryohazard?

I closely associate games with their soundtracks. Sound can make an okay game epic and a great game unforgettable. I will never ever again write music quite like these tracks because (most likely), my future games are all going to be unique, and will need to find their own voices.

All that said, I learned a lot about music development that will certainly carry forward onto future projects. One of the reasons I’m okay with the mountain of failed projects I have behind me is that I learned from each of them, and they all contributed to a sort of momentum- a driving force I’m constantly feeding into and off of. And this increase in momentum is especially true for Cryohazard, my first game ACTUALLY released!
